After seeing Sarah Palin repeatedly stumble, freeze up, and give nonsensical answers to Katie Couric, Palin’s only real measure for success in the VP debate was to go on stage and not have a nervous breakdown or spontaneously combust. She did not, so for many McBush fans, she won. But stop and think about it, what was different from the CBS interviews and the VP debate? Sarah still regurgitated talking points, spoke with a weird jumbled version of English (she LOVES the word “also”), altogether avoided the questions, and trailed off into some very odd directions with her responses.
According to the rules, to which both campaigns agreed, the VP debate would be less confrontational format which did not really allow follow up. That being said, Gwen Ifill still could have found some way to press for clarity or more information (although the recent controversy around her upcoming book may have caused her to be overly cautious). Biden was restricted from constantly challenging Palin directly for fear of being labeled as sexist. The result was that Palin’s non-answers were allowed to stand and she miraculously again became ready to assume the office of the Presidency for some Republicans and conservatives.
While some in the MSM were grateful that Katie Couric did their job for them, the media continues to ignore an elephant in the room. Palin does not seem to have the intellectual curiosity or intellectual capability to grasp the multitude and magnitude of issues that are part and parcel of the Presidency. Can’t name the newspapers she’s read, can’t name any Supreme Court cases besides Roe v. Wade, spouts talking point without a clear idea of what they mean…it is really outrageous. And now after supposedly “passing a threshold” in the debate, many pundits have said that Palin erased the Couric interviews and that Palin’s intellect is no longer an issue.
On Morning Joe, Mika tried to raise the issue, but she was shut down by Joe who immediately said that Palin has as much experience as Obama. Mika attempted to clarify the issue by pointing to her brain and saying, “This is NOT about experience”. But Joe did not want to it admit that because some Republicans and conservatives don’t want to admit one simple truth. Obama, as described by a conservative Charles Krauthammer, “has got both a first-class intellect and a first-class temperament”. There is no way that Palin could have that foreign policy debate against John McCain and succeed as Obama did last week. No one (who is unbaised and fair) doubts that Obama completely understand complex domestic and foreign policy issues, can accept and understand advice from others, and has the ability formulate his own opinions.
Sarah Palin, you are no Barack Obama.
