Actually, we couldn’t decided where we were going to go on Saturday night. I wanted to go to Luckie Lounge and my sister wanted to go the Apollo…and clash of the siblings began. My aunt (who is only a year older than me) sometimes acts as the go-between and was open to doing whatever. I have to give my sister some credit though, she suggested doing something different…bowling. Although we bowled in our younger years and I bowled quite a bit while I was in the Air Force, none of us had been in the last few years. So we went to the 10 Pin website, $80 per hour for a lane gave us some pause, but the fact that we decided that we were going bring five teen-age kids with us made Atlantic Station a no-go. So we opted for Brunswick Alley close to my aunt’s house.
Let me step back and say that I wasn’t sure how this night was going to go because my sister and I had been sniping at each other for a couple of hours. The other thing is although my sister is only a year older, she always talks to me like she’s my mother and it gets on my f*cking nerves…oh yeah, forgot about unconditional love. Anyhoo, I decided to have a couple espresso martinis w/ milk so I could relax and enjoy the evening (this nugget of info will be important later in the story). Imma go off on a tangent for a minute, why is it a bad thing to use alcohol to alter your state? Really, who is NOT trying to enjoy themselves a little bit more by having a couple drinks? But I digress…
So we are in line for a ticket for a lane, when this guy comes in a walk past me. Ummm, is it just me or was that Ronnie DeVoe? I ask my sister and she assures me that it was just someone who looks like him. My aunt arrives and I ask her and she is sure it is not. However, we start reminiscing about our New Edition days. We were NE nuts, big time. While waiting for the lane to open, my aunt orders a pitcher of beer. By this time, I’m a tipsy and we are getting all hyped remembering the “If It Isn’t Love” dance routine. A bit of disclosure, Ralph belonged to my aunt and I was Bobby fan. But I think had I seen Bobby Brown, I wouldn’t really been phased because of all his issues. Ronnie on the other hand seemed untouched by alot of the negative aspects of the music industry.
Remember the espresso martinis, well by this time I’m a little silly and a little giddy and so is my aunt. I decided that if he passed by I would ask. A few minutes later, he was walking towards me, so I pulled him over and asked. His response, “I sure am!” Why was I so excited? Truth is I was suddenly reminded how much of a rabid fan of NE from about the age of 13 to about 25.
DeVoe does have a little height on him. Being 5’10 and having on 3 inch heeled boots, he was about an inch taller than I was. He’s still attractive, thank god he’s gained some weight. And he was very nice. I noticed earlier he was having a good time with the group of kids he was there with and I am assuming those cute little girls were his. He actually seemed to be a bit talkative, however, the alcohol made it hard for me to realize that he was trying to carry on a conversation while we were taking pics.
In case you are wondering, I was not looking for any kind of hook-up scenario (besides I heard he is married). It was really just about seeing my 13 yr. old self re-emerge.
I bowled an 82 in the first game and finished in second place. I don’t remember the score from the second game. It was fun and the kids had a great time. And my arm is still hurting.
Ok, I HATE taking pictures…I always end up looking very uncomfortable. So I cut myself out the pic with DeVoe. But while I was playing around with my cousin, I ended up taking a halfway decent pic, so I include that one (but I don’t know why it looks like my boobs were fighting).
