According to TPM, John McCain gave a few nonsensical responses to a Spanish reporter’s questions about the relationship between a possible McCain administration and Spain (a member of NATO). McCain preceded to take a hard line, right wing approach to the question of whether or not he would welcome Spanish PM Zapatero to the White House. The same approach McCain had taken earlier in the interview when discussing President Chavez of Venezula, with whom the United States has a very hostile relationship.
The reporter tried multiple times to remind McCain that she was talking about Spain and its PM, but McCain continued along the same lines then took a bizarre turn and started talking about Mexico and President Calderon. Exasperated, the interviewer mentioned that Spain was in Europe and McCain responded with a generic reply about US relations with allies and foes.
It is not clear whether John McCain wasn’t aware that Spain is a member of NATO, or that Spain is in Europe NOT Latin America, or that Zapatero is the PM of Spain, or if McCain is losing his bearings, or …
As for Zapatero himself, the prime minister is apparently taking this latest attack to his ego with characteristic equilibrium. McCain may not know who Spain’s leader is, but Zapatero promised to work with the new administration “whatever it is.”
