So I go on a little vacation, and the world goes to hell in a hand basket.
Last Thursday night, I was on an emotional high as I saw Barack Obama display the poise,
tenacity, thoughtfulness, and intelligence that would be necessary for the next
President. Blown away while watching the speech on HDTV, the event solidified the
return of the United States to greatness, domestically and internationally. Every pundit
and person with an opinion declared that Obama had made the DNC a success. He turned
the page on the politics of old and starting ushering a new, diverse, unified Democratic
party…and hopefully a new, diverse, unified America.
But then Friday happened.
Sarah Palin? Who? What? I laughed, and laughed and laughed and laughed. McCain is
certainly drifting off into senility. Then details about the governor started to
surface. A year in a half as governor of Alaska (whose population is similar to Charlotte,
NC). BS in Journalism? Currently under investigation for abuse of power? Six years as a
part-time mayor of Wasilla, AK (population – about 6,000). Far right social conservative
(after 8 years of Bush)? Yes, I was shocked but elated, this would be a nice way to
start my vacation. Yeah, this race is over!
As vile as Karl Rove is, he is just as smart. After telling McCain that he could not
pick Joe Lieberman as a running mate, as it would cause the Republican Party to implode,
the Rovians decided that Sarah Palin would be a good pick to excite the base and pick up
some Hillary voters. McCain agreed to offer the VP position to Palin after only meeting
her one time in February 2008, and doing an interview on Thursday (the same day as Obama’s
DNC speech). Palin accepted that night. And the Repubs were ready with their talking
points, Palin is a reformer like McCain and PALIN HAS MORE EXPERIENCE THAN OBAMA!
Gosh, that brought me back to the old adage that Black people always have to work twice
as hard and the bar is always higher than it would be for a white person. Didn’t Obama do what Americans are supposed to do? Study hard, work hard, excel at every turn, and serve your country. So let me get
this straight. He is a Columbia and Harvard grad (international relations and JD), was
a constitutional law professor, spent 7 years in the Illinois state senate (district
population over 200,000 and sponsored over 800 bills), worked a a community organizer (working with displaced workers on the Southside of Chicago), served 4 years in the US Senate
(authoring 152 bills and sponsoring/co-sponsoring over 400), and blew away the his
skeptics in the Senate when he engaged General Patreus about the Iraq conflict. Obama
has personal relationships with the King of Jordan, Iraqi’s Maliki, German’s Chancellor
Merkel, and Isreal’s Shimon Peres. But compared to a woefully under qualified white
woman who stated in 2007 that she was too focused on state government to think about the war
in Iraq and that the Iraqi invasion was a task from God, Obama is not quite able to
Did you see the audience at the RNC convention? OLD. WHITE. That pretty much sums it
up, which was in STARK contrast to the diverse DNC convention. The right-wing
conservative are elated…Palin is against abortion in any circumstance. (However,
these same people mercilessly deride teenage sex and pregnancy, have given Palin a pass
on her teenage daughter’s pregnancy. Image if Obama had a pregnant teenage daughter!)
Some Americans are happy to have a folksy, (and as Palin describes herself) a pit bull
with lipstick, and PTA/hockey mom as a VP and a potentially the CIC. Their motto is
ANYONE can become President, regardless of your credentials (as long as you are white
and attractive)! Boy, doesn’t she have a nasty attitude…lucky for her she can never be
seen as a angry black person.
Conservatives, Repubs, and many white women are up in arms that the media and the left
have the nerve to question and investigate a woman who could easily become President
(since McCain is 72 and has had multiple bouts with melanoma) and was not thoroughly
vetted….HOW DARE THEY?!?!….well that’s just SEXISM! But I guess to those
aforementioned Americans, her political views are not as important as having a
“regular person” being a heartbeat from the most powerful position in the entire world.
And yes, now we know more details: when Palin became mayor, she had a surplus but left
office with $20 million deficit, she was for the bridge to nowhere before she said “NO,
THANKS” (however, she kept the money) and she was for earmarks (and lobbyists) for
Wasilla before she was against them. Another day, another revelation.
I can see how we ended up in Iraq. The Republicans push whatever message they deem
necessary, the MSM accepts it as truth and emanates it to the masses who are too busy
with their own day-to-day issues to question the talking points. But we are not finished
yet, the Repubs have decided to play the race card, AGAIN, and incite another Oprah (who
has a talk show and is not a news organization) backlash by instigating “Oprah won’t
have Palin on her show” meme. And again, angry white people are outraged! How about
this, where is your outrage against CNN, MSNBC, FOX, ABC, NBC, or CBS because those “real”
news organizations have not interviewed Palin yet? Oh, I forgot, The McCain camp has
asserted their media control, AGAIN, and has not allowed Palin to do an interview and
it’s been over 10 days since she made her appearance in the Presidential race (everyone
knows she feverishly studying Cliff notes of foreign and domestic policies).
I was talking to a friend and wanted validation on what I know to be true, so I asked,
“How do you think Obama feels after all this?” Her response: “Black”.
After seeing some of the electorate revert back to the divisive, partisan environment of the Bush Presidency, I am not longer shocked or angry. With just over a month to register new voters, followed by a push to get voters to the polls, it’s time to be positive, motivated, and have faith. And doing it like only he can, Obama inspires us and reminds us what this election is about:
